On 6th April 2008 in England changes were introduced that affected development rights for solar power and solar heating requirements for planning permission for most solar water heating installations. As long as the building complies with the certain size criteria Roof mounted and stand-alone systems can now be installed. However, Photovoltaic PV System Exceptions apply for Listed Buildings, and buildings in Conservation Areas and World Heritage Sites.
In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the devolved governments changes are  currently being considered to the legislation on permitted developments to facilitate installations of dollar heating control technologies, including solar water heating. This Legislation is expected in later this year.
