How does solar technology work?
Grid connected solar power systems are simple: Through solar radiation a DC current is produced in the solar generators. This DC current is converted to standard AC current in a grid connected inverter and dispatched directly into the public power grid.
Where can solar technology be implemented sensibly?
The annual solar radiation in England is quite sufficient for the functioning of solar energy systems. With a 1 kWp you can achieve a yearly energy yield of approx. 800 to 1,000 kWh" in our latitude. Our high quality solar generators can yield energy even with a cloudy sky. The energy yield can differ depending on direction, inclination of the roof and local conditions. On the following pages you will find an overview of our standard grid-connected systems for power production of up to 5 kWp. The components used in these systems are described individually and in detail. Large-scale systems are either compiled from several standard systems or are designed to the customer's individual wishes. All systems offered are built with high-quality components, as demonstrated by thousands of applications. The components are optimised to match perfectly, thus ensuring ideal system efficiency and high power production efficiency.
Since the end of 2003 we deliver grid-connected systems with SUNSET AS and TWIN solar generators with pre-selected stringing. An optimum wiring of the solar generators leads to a maximum result. We offer this extra service automatically and without surcharge.

SUNSET has a wide range of grid-connected systems on offer. We can offer you the appropriate, yield optimised, system, for all possible appliances. Solar generators are divided into three cell types: single-crystal, polycrystalline and amorphous. In order to simplify the different Photovoltaic technologies, we will introduce each system step by step.
Solar Material:
Single-Crystal Solar Cell:
High-purity semi-conducting material is needed to produce single-crystal silicon cells. Single-crystal silicon ingots are drawn out of a silicon melt and are subsequently cut to thin wafers. This complex production process ensures relatively high efficiency. Single-crystal cells also guarantee long-term stability of power output. The cells' power output remains almost level throughout their working life. Single crystal cells supply a higher energy yield than other cell types, especially under diffuse light conditions (e.g. overcast sky).
Polycrystalline Solar Cell:
The production of polycrystalline silicon cells is more cost-efficient. Hereby the liquid silicon is poured into blocks and subsequently cut into wafers. As the block solidifies crystal structures in varying sizes form. The variations of the crystal structure result in a slightly lower cell efficiency. Due to their square shape the solar cells make a better use of the space available in solar generators. Polycrystalline solar generators can therefore almost achieve the same area efficiency of single-crystal modules. The amorphous cells have improved in cost and efficiency over the last 5 years and took advantage over the polycrystalline cells. However we can deliver polycrystalline cells on request. Amorphous Solar Cell:
Solar cells are called amorphous or thin film cells if a silicon film is applied to glass or to some other substrate. The film is les than 1 lam thick (a humane hair is 50 - 100 pm thick), so that the production costs are reduced by the lower material costs alone. New production processes have increase considerably the efficiency of amorphous silicon. Besides many other smaller technical specialties, such as higher output at high temperatures, bypass diodes have become obsolete. The omission of bypass diodes enable modern amorphous solar modules to almost reach the same average yearly yield of other cell types but for much less money!

SUNSET® AS 1105 / AS 1205 / AS 1305 Single-Crystal:

Module description:
55 highly efficient single crystal silicon solar cells are used in the AS 1105, AS 1205, and AS 1305 solar generators. The solar cells have an anti-reflex surface increasing optical efficiency.
The solar cells are wired together in two strings, each of which is protected with a bypass diode against damage through hot spots.
The tried and tested module design protects the solar cells against moisture, gives UV stability, and allows for thermal expansion. The front covering is made of top quality tempered solar glazing. The solar glazing and the solar cell laminate are joined together into a unit and mounted in a torsion resistant frame, made of anodised aluminium. The modules are produced to strict quality standards.
Since the end of 2003 we deliver grid-connected systems with SUNSET AS and TWIN solar generators with pre-selected stringing. An optimum wiring of the solar generators leads to a maximum result. We offer this extra service automatically and without surcharge.

SUNSET® KA 60 Amorphous Cell

Module description:
Advanced manufacturing technology enables the production of highly efficient and large area, amorphous solar cells. A Tedlar layer is affixed directly to the back of the front pane, making the KA 60 almost half as heavy as comparable module.
These amorphous solar cells utilise a wide range of the solar spectrum, making them more efficient than other types of amorphous solar cells. The yield per year is comparable to that of crystalline silicon.

Module description:
Advanced manufacturing technology enables the production of highly efficient and large-area, amorphous solar cells. The TWIN modules utilize Triple Junction technology. The cell consists of three semi conducting layers each recipient to a different part of the solar spectrum.

These amorphous solar cells utilise a wide range of the solar spectrum, making them more efficient than other types of amorphous solar cells. Due to the low temperature coefficient the yield per year exceeds that of crystalline silicon modules.
These glass-free, lightweight, weather proof and vandal resistant modules can be implemented in a wide range of applications from battery charging applications to grid-connected systems.
The tried and tested module design protects the solar cells against moisture, gives UV stability, and allows for thermal expansion. The front covering is made of top quality tempered solar glazing. The solar glazing and the solar cell laminate are joined together into a unit and mounted in a torsion resistant frame, made of anodised aluminium.

Inverter SUN3Grid® 4000/5000/6000
The SUN3Grid® 4000/5000/6000 inverters set a new standard in the area of photovoltaic inverters. Especially with medium-sized installations of up to 100 kWp, using our SUN3Grid® inverter a very high efficiency of nearly 96% per year can be achieved. Thanks to the SUN3Grid® inverter cut-off at night (0 Watt) the installation of a second supply meter and it's additional costs are unnecessary! An optimisation of the supply power can already be reached with partial load because of the high efficiency.
As we have combined safety and control functions, your installation complexity has been reduced by a great extent. All required safety circuits for the operation have been already integrated:
- Discharger for AC and DC side
- 3-Phases mains monitoring
- Temperature control
- Integrated power line peak protection
The transformer-free conception of the SUN3Grid® inverter enables a soundless operation. A back plate for an easy wall installation of the SUN3Grid® inverter is included in our scope of supply. To increase the efficiency of the installation the inverter usually is cool and dry mounted.
All inverters of the SUN3Grid® series are ex-works equipped with a display for showing the operational data and conditions. The following data can be obtained:
